THE POWER OF TONGUE:  ESSENCE OF TAMING YOUR TONGUE AS A CHRISTIAN

BRO. ADEKOYA A. A.

On 2th of July JULY 2025 @ CATHEDRAL CHURCH OF OUR SAVIOUR, ITALAWAJODA, IJEBU-ODE.

The word of God tells us in Proverbs 18:21. “Death and life are the power of the tongue, they that love shall eat the fruit thereof”. *Yoruba Interpretation:- “Iku ati iye mbe ni ipa ahon, awon eniti o si nlo o yio je ere re”*

What we say, and the things we talk about most frequently and naturally, reveal what is in our mind and what dominates our thinking, Prov.23:7. For as a man thinketh in his heart, so is he, and out of the abundance of the heart, the heart speaketh:- Mat:-12:34

There are many potential consequences of the ways in which we can use our tongues. As Christians, the Bible gives us warning and guidance regarding the use of our tongues.

The tongue is a comparatively small part of the human body BUT it has the great power. James 3:6 says the tongue is a fire and world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members that it defileth the whole body, and setetth on fire the course of nature, and it is set on fire of hell, James 3:7 even says:- For every kind of beasts, and of birds, and of serpents, and of things in the sea is tamed, and hath been tamed by mankind. BUT in James 3:8, the tongue can no man tame, it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison. This is telling us to be very careful and learn to tame how you engage your tongue. In James 3:10, Out of the same mouth, proceedeth Blessings and Cursings. Brethren, these things ought not to be so: ” Orisun ahon a ma sun omi tutu ati omiro jade lati ojusun Kanna  wa bi?

A tongue under control is evidence of spiritual maturity. When a brethren is living close to God, in submission and obedience to His will as revealed in the word of God, then the tongue will be used for good.

There is time to keep quiet and a time to speak. Eccl 3:7. Knowing when to speak and what to say and when to remain silent requires God’s wisdom. That wisdom is pure, peaceable, gentle, considerate, impartial and without hypocricy (James 3:17) Devoid of careless, unthinkable thoughts and evil speaking.

A few words, or sometimes only a facial expression, can ruin another person’s reputation and cause great unhappiness and misery in that person’s life.

The consequences of evil words can be like a rapidly spreading fire. Evil speaking can affect every aspect of an individual’s life.

A Christian can be guilty of inconsistency and duplicity in his speech, using his tongue to bless God and also to curse man: Such use of tongue can damage and hurt those who are the victims of words spoken and will ADVERSELY affect the speaker himself. The Bible in Lev.19:16 and Pro.6:19 says: ” We must be careful and be warned ‘ not to go up and down as talebearer or sow discord among brethren:- (rumour mongers, bad news carrier, concocting stories and fallacies.

We need to be very careful of this evil practice. The tongue can be full of deadly poison: James 3:8

It is so easy to sin by speaking unwisely or telling lies. We should consider the implications and the impact before we speak and ask yourself if it true, fair, kind, honest and necessary and why are you saying it.

When you use your tongue for sinful purposes:- deliberate lies, story fabrication for monetary fraud, concocting stories for  deceits or financial greed. 1 Cor. 10:12 says: ‘ wherefore let him that thinketh he standeth takes heed lest he fall”.

*WE SHOULD SPEAK TO HONOUR THE SPIRIT OF GOD IN US*

A Christian speech should always be with grace: Col.4:6. The thing we say or do not say reveal our spiritual condition. If we are to witness effectively to the saving grace of Our Lord and Savior, our speech must be wise and gracious.

Let your speech be courteous and polite irrespective of where you are, what you are doing, whom you are speaking to. In Eph 4:29.”Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the heaven. If we speak graciously and if our speech is seasoned with salt, it will be pure and free from corruption”

Whatever statements you utter from your mouth goes beyond ordinary listening purposes.

The way you speak reflects the way you think.  Your maturity influences the way you speak.  As Christians engage more in Bible reading, attending bible fellowship and imbibe the spirit of God for more understanding in meaningful way of life which will definitely sharpen your utterances to the glory of God.

TOPIC: LOVE IN ACTION -TEXT: JOHN 3:16

BRO ABIODUN ADESOYE

Date: 30TH MARCH, 2025

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in him should not perish, but have eternal life. There are four key things from the passage:

  1. For God so loved the world
  2. He gave his only begotten son
  3. That whosoever believes in him will not perish
  4. Have everlasting life. Love is such a strong thing that transcend human thinking. 1st Corinthians 13: 4 – 8a says Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails. Humanly speaking all these looks unachievable. Why will you tell me not to be angry when someone upsets me? Why should I be patient when it looks like the other person is taking advantage of my kindness or taking me for a ride and so many other examples can be popping up in mind. Love I say again is a such a strong thing that transcend human thinking. John 17: 14 -15 shows clearly that we are in this world as strangers and not of this world and therefore we cannot do things the way of the world. Dear brothes, the world we are in today has its own standards, just like where we read, we are from a different kingdom on assignment in this world. We are on a mission here. The Bible remains our guide as we navigate this world. We cannot do things like the people of this world. No wonder all the passages we read gave us task that look humanly impossible but with God all things are possible. We come from a kingdom where power is released for us to achieve the impossible. A kingdom where nothing is impossible. Wont you rather be a citizen of that kingdom. A kingdom where we can boldly sing: I’ve still got joy in chaos I’ve got peace that makes no sense So I won’t be going under I’m not held by my own strength Cause I build my life on Jesus He’s never let me down He’s faithful through every season So why would He fail now? No, He won’t. A kingdom where whether we have food or not, we remain joyful because our Joy isn’t tied to things we can hold on to. Jeremiah 29: 11 For I know the plans I have for you,” says the LORD. “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope. If I know this why then do I have to worry? If I know this why then do I have to be afraid? Because he lives, I can face tomorrow, because he lives, all fear is gone, because I know, He holds the future, and life is worth a living, just because he lives. In Conclusion
Our passage said because of his love for us, He sent his only begotten son to die for us. An innocent person becoming guilty that we might be free from the shackles of Satan and that through him we will have everlasting life, if we believe in him. Such kind of love cannot be found in the world of today. As we go through the year, look back at how God has shown you love even when you didn’t deserve it, came through for you, saved you from yourself, now what is he asking of you? What are you going to give to him to show your love for him? He is not asking for too much, he wants you to surrender your life to him. He wants to drive the wheels of your life. I have never seen him fail; he wont start with you. It is a beautiful thing that we are born into the Christian home, but again some of us need to find God and know him for ourselves. Being a Christian and isn’t a guarantee that you will make heaven except you walk in that part. GOD HAS COMPLETED THE WORK OF YOUR SALVATION ON THE CROSS, NOW IT IS LEFT FOR YOU TO MAKE UP YOUR MIND AND BE ON GOD’S SIDE.

prayer: Lord Jesus, I am back, grant me the strength to live for you, help me to take my eyes off the distractions of this world and focus my gaze on you. Help me to grow more and more in you in Jesus’ name. Amen God, we have no power of our own, we put our lives in your hand, lead us on to your praise and glory. Amen.

The Lord bless you all.
